Lemuel Benedict: In 1942, retired broker from Wall Street, Lemuel Benedict, claims in an interview to have created the meal as a morning hangover cure. The New Yorker reports that after walking into a hotel one day in 1894, he ordered “buttered toast, crisp bacon, poached eggs and a hooker of hollandaise”. The hotel was so impressed with his choice that they decided to add it to the menu.
Commodore E.C. Benedict: In 1967, a column written in The New York Times Magazine discussed a letter written by Edward Montgomery, who insisted that Commodore E.C. Benedict was the inventor of Eggs Benedict. Montgomery stated that his mother gave him the recipe for this delectable dish after receiving it from Benedict via her brother.
Mr and Mrs Benedict: While living in New York, Mr and Mrs Benedict were regular diners at Delmonico’s Hotel. After asking the maître d'hôtel if there were any new dishes on the menu, he told Mrs Benedict to suggest something to which she quickly replied poached eggs on a toasted English muffin, with ham, hollandaise sauce, and a truffle on top.
